Waiting on Wednesday #7

Waiting on Wednesday

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, to spotlight upcoming releases that make me clap in bookish glee.

This week, I have chosen a few upcoming selections from authors I have previously read to which and am giddily looking forward.

This week’s selections:

13638125Vicious by Victoria Schwab

Release date:  September 24, 2013

Publisher:  Tor

Why?  Schwab is a wonderful new voice in the fantasy genre, and this one for an older crowd sounds like an interesting concept.

From the jacket:

‘A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other.  In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities.  But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability.  Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will.

Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?’

Stormbringers by Philippa Gregory16074895

Release date:  June 4, 2013

Publisher:  Simon Pulse

Series:  Order of Darkness #2

Why?  The first book has me intrigued to plunge further into the story, and you really can’t go wrong with Philippa Gregory.  Although, I must say, that I am not digging the cover as much as the original style of the first book, Changeling.

From the jacket:

‘The second book in a YA quartet filled with intrigue, mystery, and romance, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory.

Italy, 1453.  Luca and Isolde grow more and more attracted to each other as they continue their journey to unravel the mysteries throughout Christendom.  But their travels are delayed by the uprising of an intense religious crusade that threatens the balance of the civilized world.  Death lingers in the air as war ravages on, but this religious conflict is nothing compared to the arrival of an intense and deadly storm.

Caught in the midst of unimaginable chaos, Luca and Isolde must rely on one another in order to survive.

The second in Philippa Gregory’s four-book series delves further into a forbidden romance and an epic quest.  And the tension builds as secrets about The Order of Darkness are finally revealed…

15513156Of Triton by Anna Banks

Release date:  May 28, 2013

Publisher:  Feiwel & Friends

Series:  Of Poseidon #2

Why?  This is a lovely series that has a very fluid writing style that really drew me in.  The first was a very fun read, that was just dark enough in spots from being considered fluff.  I am really looking forward to seeing where this adventure is going.

From the jacket:  (If you have not read the first book, I am issuing a Spoiler Alert)

‘In this sequel to OF POSEIDON, Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis:  As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below.  Syrena law states that all Half- Breeds should be put to death.

As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another.  Which leaves Emma with a decision to make:  Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best?  Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?’
