GUEST POST: Andrew Fukuda- ‘The Hunt’ Playlist

Andrew Fukuda is stopping by today to take us behind the scenes of his brand new debut The Hunt.  Since music played a big part in helping him set the mood while writing, he has provided us with the inspiration and playlist that helped build the stark, dystopian world that has been taken over by blood-thirsty vampires, leaving the remaining humans to figure out how to survive.  For my review of this wonderful new world, simply scroll down to the previous post.  Now, how about a warm welcome for Mr. Fukuda!

******************************************************************************

The Hunt is set in a stark, bleak world where vampires have overtaken the earth and humans have been driven to virtual extinction. To put me in the mood, I listened to songs that were raw and relatively stripped-down, and which were lyrically filled with angst. The theme of darkness and light is one which percolates throughout The Hunt, and songs which were similarly themed (either lyrically or tonally) found their way onto my playlist. Post-grunge bands whose works are heavily infused with spirituality, such as Skillet and Switchfoot, really got me in the right mood, and I felt quite indebted to them.

The Hunt is not completely void of hope or even romance. The romantic song by Yiruma really sticks out in this group, and, as in the book, it is a respite of softness. I end the playlist with CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS by U2 because it really plays well with the desperate hope in not only Gene’s heart, but in the pages of this book.

The playlist:

  • FALLING INSIDE THE BLACK by Skillet
  • SOMEWHERE I BELONG by Linkin Park
  • DREAM IS COLLAPSING by Hans Zimmer
  • AGGRESSIVE EXPANSION by James Horner
  • WHISPERS IN THE DARK by Skillet
  • AFTERLIFE by Switchfoot
  • RIVER FLOWS IN YOU by Yiruma
  • HURT by Johnny Cash
  • LOVESONG by The Cure
  • SORROW by The National
  • MAD WORLD by Michael Andrews
  • CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS by U2

The playlist is available on Grooveshark.
