In the picturesque, quite town of Smitten, Vermont, four women are quickly pushed out of their comfort zones when they learn that the town’s major source of income, the lumber company, is shutting down.  In an effort to save the place that they all have come to know as home, they devise a plan to transform their already beautiful town into a romantic tourist destination.  However, not all of the residents are as excited about the idea.

With each one of the authors writing the story of each of the four women, Smitten is a collection of short stories that create a whole picture.  Natalie, Julia, Shelby, and Reese are all very different, but have two things in common: their friendship and their love of the town.  After getting most of town behind their idea, Smitten transforms quickly into a town with cute shops, cabins, skiing- becoming the perfect romantic destination.

At first, a couple of the male business owners in the community feel that the idea is not a smart investment, and do not see the appeal in the idea.  The four friends, however, will not take no for an answer.  They wind up getting the men entangled in their plans and show them what the possibilities are with such an idea.  During the course of the stories, it becomes clear that no one is immune to the concept of love and romance.  While creating romance for everyone else, they also each learn to let love into their own lives.

With Smitten, we are given a story of hope, forgiveness, self-discovery, and love.  With a town reminiscent of Gilmore Girls, and a cast and moral compass of Seventh Heaven, the result is sweet as saccharine, and serves as a not-so-guilty pleasure.  At times, the idea of love solving everything becomes a bit too obvious and overdone.  However, it is also what will keep the hopeful romantic flipping the pages.  This book is perfect for those that want a great Valentine’s story and who keep the hope of happily-ever-afters alive.
